a corticosteroid drug used principally to treat severe allergies, ear and eye diseases, rheumatic and other inflammatory conditions, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. It is administered by mouth, by injection into a joint, or as eye or ear drops; side-effects include sodium and fluid retention, muscle weakness, convulsions, vertigo, headache, and hormonal disturbances (including menstrual irregularities). Dexamethasone is also used in a series of tests for Cushing's syndrome (see dexamethasone suppression tests).
